“Film On Affirmative Action Banned …”

“… in Three Indian States,” the New York Times reported a few days ago.

Today is the opening day of “Aarakshan,” which means “reservation” –- a deeply polarizing issue that involves offering a number of seats in Indian universities exclusively to the country’s most marginalized groups including low-caste Hindus. Reservation is akin to affirmative action in the United States, though it is more rigid and specific. Those in favor of it say it offers opportunities to the socially disadvantaged in India’s deeply hierarchical society. Critics say the system doesn’t reward merit or talent.

Now, the film has drawn protests from people who say these marginalized groups are reflected poorly in the film….

Well we certainly don’t want “marginalized groups” to be “reflected” as … marginalized.

Say What?
