Diverse Diversities

A controversy has broken out at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) because, according to a black faculty and staff group, “none of the people who made the final cut to lead IUPUI are minorities.

The 18 member search committee includes one black, a professor, and two Asians, who are deans.

Kevin Rome, IUPUI assistant vice chancellor for student life and diversity, said, “”We’re not asking for anyone to be hired because they are black or Asian.”

Interestingly, in neighboring Michigan Asians are not included among those chosen to receive preferences for the purpose of enhancing diversity. (It would be easy to suspect that this may be because they are not “underrepresented,” but for the fact that there are many other groups who are “underrepresented” who also do not receive preferences.)

Say What?
