Yesterday in Charlottesville former governor of Virginia, former Democratic National Committee Chairman, and current Democratic Senate candidate Tim Kaine joined the Weiner-roast by insisting to an interviewer that “Lying is unforgivable. Lying publicly about something like this is unforgivable and he [Weiner] should resign.”
Funny, but I don’t recall Kaine ever saying that he thought President Clinton should have been impeached for lying about his inappropriate sexual behavior, not to mention perjury and suborning perjury.
1) I might think that the crimes/behavior of the President are bad enough that he should resign, but not at the level that the constitution requires for impeachment.
2) Even if the crimes/behavior of the President are worse than that of a congressman, it might make sense that I want the congressman to resign but not the President. The reason is that the resignation of a congressman does not have a huge effect on the country, whereas the resignation of the President does have a huge effect.
The point is the president should be held to a much higher standard, not given more leeway in his actions. If a sitting president commits any crime or misdemeanor he brings a far greater discredit on the country than a congressman. Any infraction shouldn’t be forgiven simply because he holds a higher office.
