    I fear the reason that Republicans run from this issue is not how many people agree, it’s how likely this is to be a voting issue.

    Most of the broad middle class agree that making education/employment based on race is a bad thing. However most wouldn’t name it in their top 10 issues. Just not that interesting unless you have a kid on the bubble for an elite school or are looking for a government job. However the groups that think AA is a good idea see it as a voting issue.

    A number of social issues are like this. Most agree generally with one side, but the fervor lies on the other. Politicians will never want to offend the small faction who really care in order to curry favor with the broad majority that doesn’t care. Not fair, but just how things work.

    Sounds to me like family friendly version of the Southern Strategy.

    And the racial demographics of the Michigan Prop 2 vote lend credence to my opinion.
