58% Of Voters Out Of “Mainstream”

The “mainstream” as charted by liberals flows down a curious course. Four days before the recent Nov. 7 election Alex Kellogg wrote hopefully in The American Prospect that Michigan might be the “last battleground” for the effort to end affirmative action. That’s because, he asserted, almost gloating, “the most notable development” revealed by the campaign for and against the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative

is the degree to which affirmative action has actually attained mainstream acceptance and legitimacy, not only on the left but among civic, religious, and business leaders — and even some Republicans.

Kellogg noted that both the Democratic and Republican candidates for governor supported maintaining racial preferences, and added:

But it isn’t Granholm or DeVos’s support of affirmative action that is so telling. The ultimate sign that it has gone mainstream — not only in Michigan but nationwide — is the support it has gained in the business community. Virtually every major company endorses it and hundreds of corporations have supported legal efforts to allow it to continue.

Four days later 58% of Michigan’s voters voted to amend their state constitution to ban state-sponsored racial and ethnic preferences. But no matter: I’m sure The American Prospect and its writers view those voters as out of the “mainstream,” even though their vote followed the votes of similar majorities in the similarly blue states of California and Washington.

ADDENDUM

I should note that this article claims that I “attacked” Rep. Harold Ford, Jr., for his “admission” that “he was the beneficiary of affirmative action, which he says aided him in gaining admittance to the University of Michigan’s law school.”

Attacked? I don’t think so, but you be the judge by looking here and here. I did criticized Ford’s assumption that affirmative action is justified because it produced … him, but if that’s an attack at all it’s an attack on affirmative action.

Yes, he managed to tout Harold Ford and anti-MCRI forces… about the only two Democratic losses on Tuesday. But despite his lack of perspicacity, he was right on his underlying observation: the entire establishment is pro-affirmative action. (Which is precisely why it’s so absurd to claim that it is needed.) It’s only the actual people in the United States who oppose racial discrimination.

Which “actual people” are those, David?

Which “actual people” are those, David?

The 58% of voters in Michigan and Washington and 54% of voters in California who voted against discrimination.

Not the business, religious, military, political, or educational establishments.

    >>>”Among white voters, CNN found that 59 percent backed the ban, while only 14 percent of black voters did so.”

Which is what I’ve been telling you anti-affirmative action types. As the country browns, there will be less successful white male advocacy initiatives.

You may be in denial of the Census, but that fact remains.
