The New Invisible Man (And Woman)

The Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison, is one of the great American novels. If it were written today, however, its protagonist might have to be a different color.

This just in from a reader about school meetings in St. Paul (read the entries for Oct. 3 and 4):

You’re Invited

Community Conversations with Saint Paul Public Schools’ new superintendent, Dr. Meria Carstarphen.

She will be available to share her goals and vision for Saint Paul Public Schools and to hear your ideas, concerns and suggestions.

Meet Dr. Meria Carstarphen at one of the following events:

The flyer than proceeded to list meeting times and places for an “African American Community Conversation,” a “Somali Community Conversation,” and a “Latino Community Conversation,” and a “Hmong Community Conversation.”

Did Superintendent Dr. Carstarphen leave anyone out? Oh, so you did notice. But don’t worry. No slight was intended. In fact, the only reason the American Indians weren’t listed is that a Native American Community Conversation had already been held in late Sept.

For some reason there was one other minority community still strangely unscheduled.

i wonder what these “community conversations” entail.

Why have targetted “Community Conversations” at all? That’s more divisive than having one big group meeting.

All of the diverse groups should meet “in the same tent, ” and on the same night.

I wonder what would happen if a white person showed up at one of the other meetings? I mean, Minnesota probably has some kind of open meetings/sunshine law (although it may only apply to school boards and the like), and even if it doesn’t, it would be interesting to see if such meetings were exclusionary (and in violation of the EPC).

And is the Somali community big in Minnesota? (it may be)

For the record, the title is “Invisible Man”, not “The Invisible Man”. The latter is a cheesy (in a good sense) SciFi film.

    Unbelievable.

I wouldn’t have a problem with, say, the Somali parents getting together on their own. For the superintendent to set up such groups is like de jure segregration.
