Contraceptive Discrimination

Chetly Zarko points out that the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, which up to now has been busy trying to prevent the citizens of Michigan from having an opportunity to amend their constitution to prevent discrimination based on race or gender, has discovered a new problem in need of its solutions: contraceptive discrimination.

At its August 21, 2006, meeting in Muskegon, the Commission unanimously adopted a ruling formally recognizing that the exclusion of contraceptives from an otherwise comprehensive health plan violates the Michigan Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. The ruling reflects the Commission’s interpretation that excluding prescription contraceptives targets women unfairly because only women are directly affected by pregnancy.
