Correction(s)!

Since in the post immediately below I have just given a newspaper ombudsman a (deservedly) hard time for a whopper of an error, it is, alas, incumbent on me to practice what I preach.

Editor extraordinaire Linda Seebach politely points out two errors in recent posts of mine. First, pointing to UPDATE II in this post, regarding the columnist Ruben Navarette, she reminds me that “[h]is name is Ruben, not like the sandwich.” I had misspelled his first name as “Reuben,” now corrected.

Second, pointing to this post, she sent me this link to an argument that the statistics on fatalities from college drinking that I had taken from a letter to the Charlottesville Daily Progress are bogus.

Moral: Blogs can be useful, if I do say so myself, in calling attention to errors and bias in the mainstream press, and they — and equally important, their readers — can be similarly useful in pointing out errors and bias in blogs. This blog is especially fortunate in having such well-informed and attentive readers.

Meanwhile, rest assured that if I had any editors I would be giving them a hard time for missing errors such as those mentioned above.

You are way more than generous. I think blogs and traditional media — of which I’m a part — are mutually reinforcing, to the benefit of both.

I should add, that the only reason these posts came to my attention is that John’s blog is on my must-read list for anyone dedicated to civil rights in its originally pure form.

While I disagree with most of your stances on diversity and preference John, I have a great deal of respect for your fairness, even-handedness, and honesty. Hearing what people on the other side of the debate think and working through our disagreements is the only way that we are going to make progress in this country.

“Discriminations” is a great blog and on my must-read list as well.
