The Chronicle of Higher Education reported on Friday that the journal, Black Issues in Higher Education, will change its name to Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
According to the publisher, “the journal has become the leading higher education publication focused on the special interests of people of color.” Apparently some new colors will be added to “the spectrum”:
“Over the years, our audience has grown to include a very wide spectrum of readers as we have embraced the challenging issues of diversity on college campuses. We felt the change would better reflect the direction of the publication and help our readers and advertisers fully appreciate the content covered by the magazine,” [Journal president William E.] Cox said.
I wonder if such organizations as the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Black Social Workers, the National Black Police Association, the National Black Nurses Association, the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, etc., etc., etc. will follow suit.
How about the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People? Just ahead of their time, I guess.
This probably isn’t the time or place, but I would like to point out that black is actually the absence of all color, whereas white is the presence of all colors (as far as light is concerned).
I think that this is kind of ironically funny, but it’s probably just me.
Gyp, not to further derail the thread, but while what you wrote is correct as concerns light, we are colored by pigment absorbing light, not by ourselves emitting light, and black pigment is an equal combination of all other colors, while white pigment is the absence of color.
