Racial Preference Unpopular … In New Zealand

From a transcript of “The World Today,” a popular Australian radio program:

In an extraordinary turnaround, the opposition National Party has jumped 17 points in the latest opinion poll, putting it ahead of the Labour government for the first time in years.

….

Dr Don Brash, a former Reserve Bank Governor, has dragged his Party from irrelevancy to an election winning position in just months. He’s done it by campaigning on one theme, that Maori get too many special privileges and that there should be one law for all New Zealanders.

DON BRASH: I think we’re moving down a racially divided track. We’ve got more and more laws in New Zealand which give special preferences or special status to Maori New Zealanders and I think that’s a very dangerous direction.

Fine, just as long as we check the Maori got compensated for all the torts perpetrated by European settlers. (Snicker.)

(At least in the USA, these calls are often attempts to repudiate treaty obligations, wrapped up in a civil rights package.)
