When Californians vote on October whether or not to recall Gov. Gray Davis, they will also vote on Ward Connerly’s Racial Privacy Initiative, which was originally scheduled to appear on the March 2004 ballot.

This initiative is opposed by all the usual suspects, including the governing boards of the University of California, the state colleges, and the community colleges who say they need racial data “to monitor progress on programs aimed at increasing diversity.” (Link requires subscription)

“Data collection in this regard is a valuable tool that helps the state and the system to measure, inform, improve, and define challenges, failures, and successes,” said Cathy Unger, president of the community colleges’ Board of Governors. “Without it, we are flying blind.”

That’s the idea: colorblind.
