Does Subtraction = Addition?

Matt Evans of The Buck Stops Here asks an interesting question of those who support racial preferences:

I was anxious to know whether these defenders would support a policy that, rather than award Black and Latino applicants 20 points on their admissions index, the school deducted 20 points from Asian, Jewish and white applicants.

In email Evans quotes, Jack Balkin attempts to respond.

I think what Balkin is saying is that as long as only whites suffer a diminishing portion of the pie, any policy that discriminates in favor of minorities is ok with him.

If Jews exceed their proportion of the population, ok; if Asians exceed their portion ok; ditto for blacks and Hispanics. However, if whites exceed their proportion of the population, must be racism.
