Racial Non-Profiling In Colorado

Reader Linda Seebach writes both editorials and a column for the Rocky Mountain News, and they are very good. For one of her terrific editorials, look here. (Note: the first time I tried this link it took me to a general cover page, from which I went to “Opinion” and then to the edit on racial profiling. Later it worked fine, but that might be because the page was cached.)

Anyway, a survey was conducted of more than 200,000 traffic stops by the California State Patrol. The results were quite interesting.

We can say with confidence that there is one and only one racial or ethnic group that is stopped in greater proportion than its share of the population.

White people.

Whites are 74 percent of the state’s population and accounted for 80 percent of the stops. All the other racial/ethnic groups were underrepresented, though truth to tell the differences aren’t very significant.

Men, now they may have a beef. They are roughly half the population, yet the men stopped by the patrol outnumber the women by better than 2-to-1.

This disparity may, some might argue, result from deliberate or unconscious anti-male prejudice on the part of the highway patrol. But we’d look first for other explanations relating to differences in driving behavior.

Read the whole thing.
