Regarding the late unpleasantness in Charlottesville, President Trump stated in a press conference on Aug. 15, 2017: “So this week, it is Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down. … I wonder, is it George Washington next week? And is it Thomas Jefferson the week after?”

Now comes the Charlottesville City Council, which has just “abolished the celebration of Thomas Jefferson’s birthday” (“City nixes Jefferson’s birthday as holiday,” The Daily Progress, July 2).

I suspect President Trump will be pleased by this decision, since it makes him seem prescient and will probably strengthen his re-election campaign.
