The saying, of course, is “What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander,” but a recent kerfuffle in Lexington, Virginia, raises the question of whether that injunction against double standards also applies to chickens.
Friday night Sarah Huckabee Sanders, President Trump’s press secretary, was asked to leave the Red Hen restaurant because Stephanie Wilkinson, its owner, and staff (“Several Red Hen employees are gay,” Wilkinson explained) think working in the “unethical and inhumane” Trump administration is immoral. “I have a business, and I want the business to thrive,” Wilkinson stated, but “[t]his feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals.”
Unless, of course, the person is a baker who thinks same sex marriage is immoral.
