I posted “Trumping Liberal Arts” on National Review Online’s Phi Beta Cons earlier today. Here are its first and last (actually, its only) paragraphs:
Most defenders of liberal arts argue that a liberal education engenders qualities of mind that create better citizens. And then there’s Colorado’s Democratic governor, John Hickenlooper. “Better liberal arts,” Hickenlooper recently explained, “will go a long way to making sure people understand that what [Donald Trump] says very earnestly could be a disaster if it were actually put into policy.”
Obviously Gov. Hickenlooper, and, I suspect, many other Democrats support liberal arts only insofar as they create more liberals.
“Most defenders of liberal arts argue that a liberal education engenders qualities of mind that create better citizens.”
And I’d agree.
The problems lay in institutional recognition, a well as
exclusion of “wrongthink”.
If only liberal arts “professors” and students STARTED with
a clear understanding of what “liberal” meant.
“…making sure people understand that…”change”… very earnestly could be a disaster if it were actually put into policy.”?
