New Study Unwittingly Supports “Mismatch”

Would you be surprised to learn (from a new educational research study) that students who get good grades in advanced placement classes and high scores on AP tests, i.e., who have demonstrated the desire and ability to learn difficult material, are more likely to succeed in STEM fields in college than those without that demonstrated ability?

How impressed would you be (with both advisors and advisees) by advice that college admissions officials should give more weight to AP grades and test scores than to the fact that students simply enrolled in AP classes?

What if you also learned that boys who are disorganized and girls who don’t see themselves as scientists are more likely than others to drop out of STEM fields?

What? You wouldn’t be surprised by any of these findings? I wasn’t either, as I explained in “Major Shock–Prepared Students Do Better, Study Finds” on Minding The Campus yesterday.

Say What?
