Ryan Lizza discusses a bunch of early Obama administration memos on the economy and other matters in a long New Yorker article. Some of the material is fascinating, and the article is well worth reading, but the judgment of any journalist who can write of our current political impasse that “The Republican Party has drifted much farther to the right than the Democratic Party has drifted to the left” deserves about as much respect as, say, an editorial in the New York Times or the tingle in Chris Matthews’ leg.

John,
Ronald Reagan:
Supported amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.
Signed into law Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 that mandated hospitals provide healthcare to anybody who walks through the Emergency Room door regardless of ability to pay–including illegal immigrants Reagan may or my not have granted amnesty to.
Engaged in protectionism by intervening for Harley Davidson against the Japanese motorcycle imports.
As Governor, Reagan signed Abortion Legislation.
Reagan supported the Earned Income Tax Credit.
Reagan negotiated, and traded ARMS with the Iranian Government.
Reagan raised taxes 11 times.
Reagan tripled the national debt and raised the debt ceiling 18 times.
What would the Tea Party, Rush Limbaugh or Fox News say about Ronald Reagan if he was on that debate stage last night given those historical facts?
