Blago’s Choice: Parallels Converging...
Illinois Gov. Rod (“Pay To Play”) Blagojevich has defiantly named Barack Obama’s Senate replacement, former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris, both of them no doubt believing that Burris’s blackness will blunt opposition from Democrats and others who have recently developed ethical sensitivities regarding the practice of politics in Chicago.
He sounds like a winner.
Burris, standing at the governor’s side, said he’s eager to get to work in Washington “to face a convergence of parallel crises.”Silly me. I always thought the essence of “parallel” items (lines, crises, whatever) was that they never converged.
Say What?
I don't think you're being fair. One often speaks of "parallel plot lines converging", for example. It also doesn't bother me when something is described as being "very unique". I think it reasonable that expressions that have absolutely precise meaning in mathematics are used in approximate ways in casual speaking.

This is that "black" senate seat, so it had to be Burris or someone who looked like him, right?

No, no, not unfair! Maybe dumb, but not unfair.... Actually, I myself would never speak of "parallel plot lines converging," but maybe that's just because I live in a parallel universe where terms are less flexible. I am a formalist, after all....

It must be a "black" senate seat. Otherwise, why else would the GOP, out of every other available candidate in Illinois, fly Alan Keyes in from Maryland to face Obama in 2004?
Now, the real question is going to be which "colorful adjective" Paul Shanklin uses in his inevitable song parody of Roland Burris.

We got quite a glimpse into your idea of equality and political process last time you were seen here, Cobra. You suggested that you'd like to see Ward Connerly in jail.
Let's see, wants to see his political opponents jailed for daring to express opposition. Uses a thug nickname to comment on this weblog. Screams "racist!" whenever he doesn't get what he wants. Does "Takes One to Know One" ring a bell for you?
Now, you also seem to find something to defend in the soon to be indicted governor of Illinois playing the race card as a last desperate attempt to rescue himself.
I didn't support President-elect Obama, but I'm pretty confident, Cobra, that he wants nothing to do with the likes of you. Whatever else Obama might be, he appears to believe in decency and political tolerance.
