The New York chapter of NOW has just accused Ted Kennedy of “the ultimate betrayal” because of his “endorsement of Hillary Clinton’s opponent” for the Democratic presidential nomination. (HatTip to Politico via InstaPundit). Hell hath no fury, etc.
No real surprise that a women’s group would get angry at anyone not supporting the woman, but this I find interesting:
He’s picked the new guy over us. He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton (they will of course say they support a woman president, just not “this” one).
Does NY NOW feel betrayed only by progressive white men who don’t support Hillary? Do they excuse progressive black men who don’t support her, assuming that it’s of course to be accepted and in fact perfectly acceptable for blacks automatically to support blacks over whites, even white women? And what of progressive black women? Are they also allowed to support the black candidate without incurring NY NOW’s wrath?
The only thing I can’t figure out here is whether NY NOW is guilty of double standards, or more.
NOW is such an extreme left group that its endorsement might be the kiss of death to mainstream Democratic voters. NOW is controlled by radicals who are obsessed with lesbian issues. Hillary is probably better off without them.
When the general election approaches, if Hillary is the candidate, she’s going to be hounded by revelations about her radical past and her associations with revolutionary poseurs and sexual libertines. Association with NOW will be an albatross.
I get your interest in the dueling special interest groups. I can certainly enjoy that, too. Let them tear one another to pieces!
I don’t always agree with Dr. Laura, but she refers to NOW as “the National Organization for I don’t know what kind of women.”
It’s pathetic how low the level of thought has fallen for a movement which still carries such political weight. I suspect that since we’ve long since adopted the worthwhile (freedom enhancing) feminist agenda items the best minds have moved on. I just wonder when the political apparatus will recognize what is obvious to the public.
Remembering that this is New York NOW, and not directly the Gandy entourage who neither enjoined nor denounced, it would do well to keep in mind the two faces
of the campaign of their Champion. One needs the detachable accessory to put the words out there, yet afford a plausible denial.
When that denial only comes
when backed into a corner then yes, OF COURSE a double standard has traditionally been espoused.
While SOME of Sen. Clintons
strange bedfellows have intimated that her husband
simply stay home, the Senator only claims autonomy when cornered on the debate floor before the cameras. While SOME Feminist folk have expressed astounding distaste and alienation from the miasma
that is NY NOW, I can only assume that self claimed NOW desciples continue to
endorse it.
I suppose this is ALWAYS the final destination of well intended paths that fall prey to the allure of “free contracts” for paving by the folks at the end of the road. Those “service contract” details ALWAYS turn out to be a damned albatross.
Maybe now, someone will mention Chappaquidick.
