Does Colorblind Equality Cause Population Loss?

You probably think I’m joking, but I’m not. A California organization in favor of racial preferences and opposed to colorblind racial equality points to Prop. 209 as causing a drop in the black population of California on “a scale not seen since the Exodus of 1858, when blacks left San Francisco for British Columbia due to the Fugitive Slave Act….”

Who’d a thunk: equality as a form of population control!

The article claims that “The 2006 estimate from the American Community Survey is 2.26 million African-Americans. The 2000 Census reported 2.476 million.” However, looking at the Census 2000 data, it seems that the Black or African American alone number was really 2,263,882 (2,260,648 estimated in 2006). That’s really just a 0.14% total drop, if any – given that 06 is an estimate. The number they claim for 2000 is closer to the 2,513,041 for blacks alone OR IN COMBINATION with another race. They’re comparing apples and oranges, perhaps. One has to be careful with census data, because it allows for multiple races per individual, and counts “Hispanic” separate from race. There are different ways to run the data, and get different numbers for “black”. You can have black alone, non-hispanic black, black alone or in combination, etc. One needs to be very cautious to make sure one is making an valid comparison from year to year. But, from what I can tell, there was no where NEAR a 9% drop. If anything, the population is about even. I did get a 9% drop for San Diego county – not the 20.4% claimed by this article.

Could the decline in Black population in California have anything to do with this?

“Federal prosecutors today charged members of the Latino Florencia 13 street gang with racially motivated crimes against African Americans, including several attempted homicides.

Authorities said the gang specifically tried to eliminate rival African American gangs in South L.A. and the Florence-Firestone area in an effort to “cleanse” the neighborhood. In doing so, they mistakenly harassed and attacked innocent African American residents, according to the indictment.”

    Sheesh! ANYTHING to remotely

    reinvent “slavery” empathy.

How’s affirmative action working out along the Gulf Coast?

Nothing new. In Michigan there was a spate of newspaper articles and letters to the editor after the MCRI passed claiming that educated and skilled blacks were either leaving the state or not coming in the first place because the state’s message in passing the measure was that minorities are not welcome.

How “everyone will be treated equally” transmutes to “blacks stay away” was never made clear.

    From the article:

    >>>”This report, part of a day of presentations on the impact of the anti-affirmative action initiative, looks at a variety of other demographic attributes. This multi-variate approach will help to distinguish which policy changes played the greatest role in the abrupt shift in population and other trends.”

So it’s actually trying to ACCESS what impact destroying Affirmative Action has on African-Americans in California, which is WRONG because…

“Slavery empathy?” The trend among white conseravtives seems to be “Slavery APATHY”. Look at white conservative pundit, Michael Medved:

    >>>”3. THOUGH BRUTAL, SLAVERY WASN’T GENOCIDAL: LIVE SLAVES WERE VALUABLE BUT DEAD CAPTIVES BROUGHT NO PROFIT. Historians agree that hundreds of thousands, and probably millions of slaves perished over the course of 300 years during the rigors of the “Middle Passage” across the Atlantic Ocean. Estimates remain inevitably imprecise, but range as high as one third of the slave “cargo” who perished from disease or overcrowding during transport from Africa. Perhaps the most horrifying aspect of these voyages involves the fact that no slave traders wanted to see this level of deadly suffering: they benefited only from delivering (and selling) live slaves, not from tossing corpses into the ocean. By definition, the crime of genocide requires the deliberate slaughter of a specific group of people; slavers invariably preferred oppressing and exploiting live Africans rather than murdering them en masse.”

In other words, even though MILLIONS of Africans DIED during the practice, it really wasn’t THAT bad, because Whites actually needed live slaves to exploit, rape and brutalize.

Are you in the Medved School of Revisionist History on Slavery, Captain?

Not well at all as far as Government reconstruction contracts go.

    >>>”In the midst of transparency concerns, news organizations have reported multiple dealings that raise questions about contracts let using emergency procurement procedures. Post-Katrina awards have been criticized because they lacked competition, came with exorbitantly high price tags, or went to politically connected companies.

    For example:

The Army Corps of Engineers competitively awarded Halliburton Co.’s Kellogg Brown and Root a $15 million contract for water removal services. Vice President Cheney was chief executive of Halliburton from 1995 to 2000. FEMA awarded Bechtel Corp. a letter contract — an agreement to provide services and determine the contract value and duration at a later date — for temporary housing units.

The Washington Post reported that FEMA paid $236 million to Carnival Cruise Lines for ships to provide temporary housing, but that the ships have been largely left empty.

According to Bloomberg, the Homeland Security Department awarded $521 million in temporary housing contracts to Gulf Stream Coach Inc., which has donated about $75,000 to Republican candidates and groups over the last decade.

USA Today reported that FEMA awarded no-bid contracts to All American Poly for blue tarps ($6.6 million), Alltech Inspection Services for housing inspection services ($22 million), and to G.A. Food Service for prepared meals ($28 million).

Former FEMA Director James Lee Witt has been winning disaster consulting work for his company, Witt Associates, according to The New York Times.

Another former FEMA director, Joe Allbaugh, lobbies for the Shaw Group, which has captured more than $35 million in contracts from the Army Corps for roofing and water removal services — the latter under restricted competition.”

This can’t be your idea of an ALTERNATIVE to Affirmative Action, can it Captain? Politically connected, predominantly White guys getting all the deals with no real competition?

Do you REALLY believe that Blacks were EVER treated equally in this Nation since its enception? Why do you think eliminating Affirmative-Action will change that status?
