Ridiculous Racial Rationale

If there were a prize for the most ridiculous rationale for racial discrimination, it would surely go to the University of Oregon. According to an article in the Portland Oregonian (HatTip to the Chronicle of Higher Education news blog), the university’s Underrepresented Minority Recruitment Program

provides as much as $30,000 a year for three years to reimburse departments and colleges for the cost of "startup packages" used attract new minority faculty members.

They also can support other incentives, depending on the professor's field.

The university spends about $500,000 a year on the program, part of its diversity initiatives that cost about $4 million a year.

Economics professor Bill Harbaugh has sharply criticized the program, arguing that the taxpayers’ money would be better spent preparing low-income students for college. He also notes that
the startup package for a new, nonminority faculty member in the economics department typically would total about $7,000 over the first three years. A faculty member in the minority recruitment program could get up to $97,000, he said.
So how, you wonder, does the university justify this race-based spending?
Provost Linda Brady and general counsel Melinda Grier said the program, which helps new minority faculty set up an office or lab, is legal and needed to help attract minority faculty in a competitive market....

The funds come into play after a selection committee has chosen a candidate and made an initial job offer. The funds then can be used to negotiate a final contract, [Grier] said....

The money goes to the professor's department, not to the professor, she said.

“Dollars aren't allocated based on race,” she said. “Departments get reimbursed for costs.”

By this logic, a law school or medical could be given funds that could only be spent attracting candidates who are not Jewish, and math, science, and engineering departments could be given funds that could only be spent recruiting non-Asians, if Jews and Asians are deemed “overrepresented” on those faculties.

The vast majority of universities do this, so it should not be any surprise. In fact, I have seen an even more extreme example of this kind of behavior.

The University of Michigan (and many other schools) regularly has hiring freezes. Sort of. You see, they take away money from departments for new faculty hires. Then, they give that money to the diversity department. Then, they announce a hiring freeze. Finally, the diversity department makes money available to hire new minority faculty. Of course, the departments can cry foul. If so, they lose even the money to hire the minority faculty.

Now, would you take the money and make a "diversity" hire, or cry foul?

Affirmative Action is justified because the State engaged in Sexism against Women or Racism against People of Color in hiring

To be clear, if racial discrimination for blacks is justified, then racial discrimination against blacks was never objectively wrong to begin with. It was simply a contemporary norm, an exercise in self advocacy and power politics against blacks as is racial discrimination against anyone not black today.

Further, "affirmative action" provides this generation of non blacks with every moral justification needed to discriminate against blacks without guilt.

Here, we have both the "official route" towards preferential hires, as with Oregon, and an unofficial system: If a minority candidate appears in the search, the Dept. head requests a "targeted hire" from the Provost, which covers a large portion of the startup (150k - 250k in a science dept.) and most of the salary for 3 - 5 years. The Provost then pressures the Dean of the college to not count that hire against that dept. and the dept. gets a free slot at the expense of another dept. in the same college. When it succeeds, just about everybody except the Provost (whose goal is demographic perfection) and the dept. head (whose goal is another faculty slot and a bigger pay raise) is ticked off by the politics and bs.
Sometimes it even turms comical: a dept. in this college received a targeted hire for young black woman, and all the diversity folks were wild with excitement. Later, however, when they found out that she was a) from a wealthy family, b) speaks with a valley girl accent, c) is very attractive, d) has a white boyfreind, and e) is somewhat conservative, many started planning on how to block tenure. I hope they fail.

As long as we are relating stories, I'll tell you one about a woman who was hired in one of the diversity slots at University of Michigan that I described above.

It turns out that her husband wanted a job, but there was nothing for him to do at University of Michigan.

So, she threatened to quit. After loading her up with various preferences in her first few years, they then had to turn around and give him a (non-faculty) job and PAY HIS SALARY for FIVE YEARS in a position that was not needed and had not existed.

So, the men reading this post can be happy, right? Wrong, this whole picture is sickening.

FreeMan -- You continually use the phrase "People of Color". Affirmative Action, especially the proportional representation school of Affirmative Action, was specifically designed to discriminate against people of color. It has had this effect in every university. Every time preferential treatment has been barred, the number of Asians, especially Indians and Chinese, has increased at American Universities. There is no secret about this. At all American Univesities, applications are rejected because the applicant is Asian, and the reason is Affirmative Action. It is similar to past measures, such as those that held down Jews and southern Europeans. In every case, these measures have been supported by both Universities and government, and they have always been called liberal policies.

The situation is now so bad that you can actually cast Affirmative Action not as black vs. white, but as black vs. other people of color.

FreeMan, one last time. Across this nation, Universities reject applications because the applicant is Asian, or Indian, or any number of non-preferred races. Almost all of the non-preferred races fall into the category of "people of color". That is Affirmative Action.
