Dropouts
The University of Michigan and its liberal allies in the churches, civil groups, labor unions, womens groups, corporations, and civil rights organizations spent a small, or perhaps a large, fortune — first in legal fees, then in fighting the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative — in an ultimately futile attempt to preserve racial preferences in Michigan.
Their effort, and money, would have been much better spent trying to do something about the abysmal performance of the public school system in Michigan. The Alliance For Excellent Education has analyzed the high school graduation rates of all 50 states. (HatTip to Jennifer Gratz) Here’s what it found for Michigan:
- Whites 73%
- Blacks 32%
- White–Black Graduation Rate Gap: 43%
The graduation gaps are also large in the states about to undergo initiative campaigns to eliminate racial preferences, although about half Michigan’s: Arizona, 24%; Colorado, 24%; Missouri, 22%; Oklahoma, 21%.
Citizens in those states who are concerned about equality should give some serious thought to whether treating high school graduates differently based on their race is the best way to achieve it.
Say What?
That's unbelieveable! 68% of black kids aren't finishing high school and Mary Sue Coleman thinks the problem is that blacks can't get a quota break in admission to U Michigan?
That lady has one crazy sense of priorities. I mean, its amazing that 27% of white kids aren't finishing high school. I would have thought it would be less than 10%.
This discussion about using quotas to advance the cause of blacks getting into elite colleges is a complete absurdity. Better to focus on what's going wrong so early in the lives of so many black kids. No dad in the house. Not going to church on Sunday. A society giving a free pass on discipline and restraint.

We need Cobra to explain why this situation exists in Michigan when Detroit's school board is well represented by African American's as is the school administration.
In addition, there is no want of money ($ expenditures per student) in the Detroit Schools.
Why, then, is the graduation rate so dismal among the african amercian population?

clearly, throwing more "money" at the problem won't get us anywhere: detroit's schools are already well funded (or at least according to the poster above).
the problem is self-destructive black youth culture. they simply hate education. no amount of money can fix that.

For those of you who do not know - in 1999 Traitor to the Black Afrikan Race like Dennis Archer former Mayor of Detroit & Republican former Governor of Michigan John Engler only took away the right of the Majority Black Afrikan city to vote on its school board - with support of the Republican Michigan Legislature at the time the Detroit Public Schools had a surplus - this was done to spend the school bond $ with White European-American contractors - Now the schools have a deficit with 5 years of state control - just last year Detroiters regained the right to vote on their schools
