Michigan Scrambles To Deal With Equality, Or Doesn’t…

According to this report, the Wayne State law school has revised its admission policies. Under the new plan,

all students who meet certain grades and test scores are automatically accepted. But faculty allowed more than two dozen exceptions – including giving weight to applicants from a geographical area that includes Detroit – that can help students who fall short.

“Our policy clearly recognizes the value of overcoming adversity and prejudice regardless of background,” said law school dean Frank Wu.

The article did not list the more than two dozen exceptions to the grades/test score requirement.

The University of Michigan, based on this report, seems to be doing … well, nothing different.

Officials at the University of Michigan say they will continue the school’s policy of setting hiring goals for women and minorities and will monitor whether those goals are met. Not doing so, they say, would violate a presidential order that large institutions must have affirmative action policies to receive government funding.

“If we wouldn’t do it, we would jeopardize our federal funding,” said Anthony Walesby, senior director of the university’s Office of Institutional Equity.

Hey, here’s an idea! What if the feds started enforcing Title VI by cutting off funds to institutions that discriminate!

The article did not say what action U-M would take against departments or other hiring entities who failed to meet their “goals.”

At Michigan State, “officials have stressed the importance of diversity in the aftermath of Proposal 2.”

“This will not be easy,” said Paulette Granberry Russell, MSU’s senior adviser to the president for diversity. “We have to be guided by not only what has happened elsewhere (in other states). But we have to be guided by our values.”

MSU officials might also want to give some consideration to being guided by state law.

Apparently MSU students also “feel strongly.”

If we feel that our lives are being disrupted … in a negative way, we will disrupt the normal activities of the university,” said Bavisha Bhalsod, an MSU senior and member of the Coalition for Equal Opportunity.

It’s a shame that the students at Michigan State (did I already say they “feel strongly”?) haven’t learned there to care as much about equality as about “diversity.”

So college kids are not only throwing tantrums because Michigan voters did not sanction the race dsicrimination that they demanded, but they are now issuing open threats?

What planet are those kids on?
