Putting All That “Old Race Stuff” Behind Us

n the Washington Post’s Sunday Outlook section yesterday, Benjamin Wallace-Wells wrote that

Most Americans want to believe that the culture has moved past its racial problems….

Whatever racism remains in this country, it coexists with a galloping desire to put that old race stuff behind us, to have a national Goodbye to All That moment.

I believe one can point to the 58% of Michigan voters who voted for the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative as evidence for this contention. I’m pretty sure most of them believed that treating everyone “without regard” to race provides a more reliable path to putting “that old race stuff behind us” than continuing to dole out preferences to selected minorities into the indefinite future.

Say What?
