Private vs. Public Roads To Integration

One common argument against school vouchers is that they will increase racial segregation, or at least separation, and thus that public schools should have a monopoly because they offer the best path to integration.

On the contrary, says the research reported in this post referred to me by a reader.

Reaffirming earlier research, new studies of the voucher programs in Cleveland (.pdf) and Milwaukee (.pdf) find that private voucher schools are less racially segregated than the public schools in their districts.

Our public school student population is around 89% black, and the 9% or so made up of white students is concentrated in a handful of schools. (My daughter went to these for middle and high; they had an excellent magnet program.) It wouldn’t be strange if the private schools around here offer more racial diversity.
