Another Example Of Harvard Tolerance

Chris Crain, founder and editor of the New York Blade, a gay newspaper, writes:

In law school at Harvard, I was editor for a student newspaper on a liberal campus that often felt more closed-minded than my college [Vanderbilt] had. It was the late ’80s and the dawn of “political correctness,” before Rush Limbaugh et al. bludgeoned lefties so much with the phrase that it lost its original meaning.

I thought it anathema that students would be hissed in class in law school classrooms for challenging the constitutionality of affirmative action, a viewpoint well within the American mainstream, and I said so from the editorial page.

In response, the president of the black student group distributed a letter to every law student, saying, “I can’t wait to graduate so I won’t have to deal with ignorant white males like Chris Crain.” I’m guessing the George W. Bush years have been difficult ones for him.

Given the Bush administration’s tepid brief in the Michigan affirmative action cases, not as difficult as they should have been.

I wonder who the president of the black student group has found himself dealing with during the years since graduation.

BTW – I don’t think Limbaugh’s bludgeoning of the left with the phrase “politically correct” changed its meaning at all. I think he brought its meaning to light. It was a horrible phrase from the very beginning, even as used by people who approved of it.
