Say It Ain’t So, Jim!

If this report on Virginia Democratic Senate nominee Jim Webb’s recent visit to Roanoke is correct, the would-be senator is not quite ready for prime time.

On the current situation in the Middle East, Webb said he believes the U.S. must befriend Syria and try to use that country as an ally to broker peace between Lebanon and Israel.

If Webb loses (he’s currently behind by about 15 points, but it’s early), perhaps the president could send him on the road to Damascus to explore friendship with the Syrians.

In addition, Webb repeated his familiar recommendation that blacks should be singled out as the only beneficiaries of racial discrimination.

The country … should tailor an affirmative action plan that would aid only blacks, Webb said, because that’s the only group of people to be systematically held down decade after decade in the U.S.

“It’s not very popular to be saying that,” he said. “But it’s the truth of it.”

Forget Hispanics, Native Americans, and selected Asian Americans. I wonder if Webb would be willing to make that argument in Michigan, where women have been raising holy hell about the prospect of MCRI depriving them of preferences they think they deserve.

Jeebus. Everyone told me to vote for Webb in the primary since he was the saner Democrat. Now I’m glad I was too lazy to find my polling place at all.
