Hispanic Irony

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who is testing the waters for a presidential campaign, spoke recently in Florida.

In watching Richardson, the audience was hearing a man who is positioning himself to be the first major Hispanic American presidential candidate, and the Latinos who are an important part of this state’s political life were beaming.

“Since I’m Hispanic, his views on how we can help people come together really resonate,” said Debra Diaz, a Miami nurse anesthesiologist. “He’s a real visionary.”

So, if Ms. Diaz were not Hispanic, Richardson’s views would not “really resonate”? What kind of coming together is that?

Emphasizing ethnic and racial difference leads to coming apart, not coming together.

Say What?
