“Diversity” Dean Gone

I recently reported that M. Rick Turner, the “dean of all things black” at the University of Virginia whom I have criticized on too many occasions to cite, was recently put on administrative leave pending an investigation by The University for lying about a drug dealer in a federal case.

Turner has now retired.

Apparently The University still takes its Honor Code seriously, although some students don’t.

“I think it’s disappointing that he lied, but I think he probably had a good reason. I think he was trying to either protect a student or protect someone,” said Karlise Lewis, a UVa student….

“I think diversity in a school is very important, and I think it’s just shameful that he is having to retire,” said Lewis.

Under UVa’s Honor Code,

students must pledge not to lie, cheat, or steal, and must agree to report anyone doing so to a court of their peers

There are no exceptions, so far as I know, for lying for “a good reason” or to prevent the possible diminution of “diversity.”

Turner said that “he will remain working as president of the local NAACP,” which obviously has no similar honor code.

At least the administration has not succumbed to the relaxed standards of the quoted student.
