Another Threat To Discrimination In Michigan

Michigan liberals these days must be feeling like everyone is out to get them. No sooner does the Supreme Court give them the green light to continue discriminating when up pops the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, which threatens to take it away.

And now this:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court is considering adopting a rule that would bar state judges from manipulating jury selection to increase the number of minority jurors.

The move follows efforts by some Wayne County judges to achieve more racially representative juries.

Needless to say, the Powers That Be are not pleased.

The State Bar of Michigan, Michigan Judges Association and state Department of Civil Rights oppose the proposal.

“If it’s permissible to consider race for the purpose of deciding who gets into law school, it should be permissible for the purpose of assuring that people are tried by diverse and representative juries,” Norris J. Thomas Jr., deputy director of the State Appellate Defender Office, told the Detroit Free Press.

Good point, but then it may be a two-edged sword. After all, if the Michigan Supremes decide that juries can’t be racially manipulated, even to promote “balanced representation,” they might decide to take a look at Michigan university admissions as well.

Say What?
