Who’d A Thunk?

The New York Times‘s Adam Nagourney asks:

Who would have thought it? As she heads into retirement, Sandra Day O’Connor has become the toast of the Democrats.

Who would have thought it? Anyone who read her opinion in Grutter approving racial preferences or in McConnell v. FEC approving restrictions on political speech.

I, for one, am not sorry to see her go.

Seven of nine justices were appointed by Republican presidents, and a simple majority couldn’t be mustered to overturn racial/gender discrimination masquerading as “equal opportunity.” That’s a disgrace.

I think Justice O’Connor’s top priority in later years was to be the darling of women attorney’s organizations. She couldn’t do that by voting against AA, given the sharp liberal slant of these groups.
