More Turner Monologues

M. Rick Turner, the University of Virginia’s Dean of All Things Black, continues his monotonous monologue: Racism, Racism, Racism.

I recently wrote, in “From Supt. To Nuts,” that the Charlottesville school board has accepted the resignation, after only 10 months, of its embattled Superintendent of School over the vociferous objections of Dean Turner and friends. (That post also linked earlier posts on Turner.)

The response of Dean Turner to the school board’s action is as predictable as it is sad.

M. Rick Turner, dean of African-American affairs and the chair of the local NAACP chapter, said he thinks that the resignation of the superintendent is representative of community-wide apathy towards racism.

“The primary issue is not giving Scottie Griffin, a black female superintendent, an opportunity to do what she was hired to do,” Turner said. “This is an insidious form of blatant racism by elite white parents and the media. This is not new to Charlottesville.”

Turner said the African-American community is also “implicated in her demise” for sitting down and not supporting her.

After much fanfare and attention, UVa has just hired a new basketball coach (at a salary of $925,00) who is black. I can see it now: when he loses his first game, Dean Turner will blame the defeat on the insidious blatant racism that still permeates the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“…an insidious form of blatant racism…”

or perhaps it is a blatant form of insidious racism”. He has blathered so much on the subject he cannot even keep his charges straight.

The linked article reads as follows:

    >>>Following an undisclosed buyout of the remainder of his contract at DePaul, Leitao agreed to a five-year deal with a base salary of $215,000. Including other outside revenue, his contract sets forth a total annual income of $925,000.”

What is the significance of your statement?

They say he’s black, but he doesn’t look it.

To get into a nitpick mode, The University of Virginia has northing to do Mr. Leitao. The $925K a year is being paid by the University of Virginia Athletic Department that is a separate not-for-profit corporation from the state run university.

When people realize that the coaches, AD, etc are not employed by the university, big time college sports make more sense.
