Ward Churchill: Poster Boy For Affirmative Action

Paul Campos, a law professor at the University of Colorado, supports affirmative action “in principle.” (Hat Tip to InstaPundit) His parents immigrated from Mexico; he spoke no English when he began school; and he is “someone of generally liberal political inclinations.”

Well, note this paragraph from the cited article:

“Affirmative action is based, in part, on the idea that it will help us understand the viewpoints of the conquered as well as those of the conqueror, of the weak as well as the strong, of those far from power as well as those who wield it.”

Note how Campos has created an entirely new definition of AA, and a very expansive one at that, even as he decrys the craziness of AA in the Churchill case. AA was created to “help us understand the vewpoints of the conquered…” Where is that written in law or custom?

AA is a hydra-headed monster. Chop off one head and another grows. Campos’s article is not a definitive repudiation of AA. It is yet another re-definition and expansion of it. So, the solution is not to put an end to it, but to try once again to find a definition that is exclusive. Fat chance of that happening.

I respect Prof. Campos’s hope, but I’m afraid he’s far too optimistic.
