In a comment to this post below, Andy Lazarus sends a link to a very sensible post by liberal Mark Kleiman about the recent spate of sensible comments by liberals on race.
I agree with Mark that these comments, and the response to them (well, except for the response to Cosby, which was frequently hostile), do indeed represent something of a great leap — or at least a nice step — forward.
If some of those like Cosby and Gates and Obama who are making these sensible comments would only take the next logical step and say that it is not fair for their own children, grandchildren, etc., and those in similar circumstances, to continue receiving special treatment based on their race, now that would be really terrific news.
You are asking too much of them.
Once a group acquires the entitlement mentality, that mentality is difficult to shake off. Logic does not signify in this case.
Watching grown people whine and moan is sadly discouraging, but these whiners and moaners raise their children to be the same.
