Educational Statesmanship In Utah

The University of Utah has just named Michael K. Young, former dean of the George Washington University law school, as its new president.

In an interview, Young offered his views “on several hot-button issues.” Among his courageous and forthright stands:

* Diversity: Young said he is a supporter and pointed to GW as the most diverse law school in the nation.

* Affirmative action: He said he is not a “fan of labels,” adding that he would not identify himself as being either for it or against it.

* Guns on campus: Young would not say where he stands on the U.’s efforts to ban concealed weapons from campus, noting that he knows it’s a “very volatile issue in Utah.” He stressed that the gun policy should not transcend more important issues facing the U.

That almost sounds Kerryesque. Great nuance (no content, but great nuance).
