Depressing Vote

With an 18-17 vote on Friday the Colorado Senate just killed a bill that would have barred state universities and government agencies from considering race or gender in hiring. According to an article in the Rocky Mountain News, the one hour debate “was easily the most emotional in the Senate during the 2004 session.”

The bill lost when one Republican senator voted with the Democrats.

Republican Sen. Lew Entz from Hooper voted with Democrats. Entz said he voted on behalf of his district, which is heavily Hispanic and benefits from affirmative action.

This is the sort of development that leads many people who are not “nativist” or intolerant to resent immigration.
