Affirmative Action In Toledo

Most defenders of affirmative action deny (for reasons I’ve never understood) that it involves quotas or that they favor quotas. Where, then, are the pro-AA critics of the ubiquitous programs such as the following from Toledo, Ohio?

Mayor Jack Ford’s director of affirmative action and purchasing has blocked a $5.2 million bid from a local contractor because the contractor didn’t award 12.3 percent of the work to minority bidders.

….

Brooks Contracting, Inc., of Perrysburg Township, was selected last month as the best bidder by the Department of Public Utilities to lead a $5.9 million project to build a backup power generator for the Collins Park Water Treatment Facility. But the deal was upset two weeks ago, according to the contractor, when Yulanda McCarty-Harris, acting director of affirmative action/contract compliance and purchasing, learned the contractor was not a minority, as she claimed in her bid application, but a female.

It’s hard to know whether to laugh or cry.

Hey we certainly all know that women are not a minority in the construction business.

Government cannot be too careful when it dispenses favors. The end result of such sloppiness might be actually awarding contracts to qualified contractors. That would be going too far.

    Now I’m confused again.

While talking with a friend about the fact I can’t apply for most internships because I’m not a minority, I was informed that I was a minority because I was a woman. That was news to me.

So now I’m not a minority? Or only outside of Ohio?
