Subsidizing Un-Diversity

Jay Mathews reports in the Washington Post that, under legislation passed by Congress,

D.C. residents who attend any state university in the nation can receive up to $10,000 annually to make up the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition. They also can get up to $2,500 a year if they attend a private college in the Washington area or a historically black college.

Since 75% of the population under 18 in the District of Columbia is black, most high school graduates there are black. If “diversity” were as important as the Supreme Court and others believe, why are Congress and the D.C. government steering D.C. graduates to some campuses where most of them will not experience it? Is “diversity” only good for white people?

If the arguments for “diversity” were believed, it would make sense to provide financial incentives for white D.C. graduates to attend historically black colleges and for black D.C. graduates to attend others.

But, of course, almost no one actually believes the arguments offered by supporters of “diversity.”

Say What?
