Democrats Oppose Hispanic Media Merger

First the Dems oppose Miguel Estrada’s nomination to the Appeals Court, in part, according to some accounts, because they don’t want an appealing Hispanic to be too visible as a possible future Supreme Court nominee. Now, according to an article in today’s Washinton Post, they are opposing the merger of two Hispanic media companies, Univision and the Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation.

Democrats fear the $2.5 billion merger would place more power in the hands of a few politically active Republican business executives, who could influence the news reports heard by millions of Hispanics.

According to Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), the merger would create “a major giant in the Hispanic community that doesn’t really give a balanced perspective or the full range of discourse on issues.”

In a similar vein, P.C. Koch, the chief lobbyist for a competitor, the Spanish Broadcasting System, which opposes the merger, claims that “the merger would allow Republicans unfettered access to Latinos.”

Imagine that! Republicans having “unfettered access” to Hispanics! I assume “unfettered” means being able to speak to Hispanics without the assistance of translators in the ethnic interest groups or those portions of the press that provide what Rep.Sanchez and friends regard as a “balanced perspective.”

    This merger should be declined.

Before the politicians weigh out their pros / cons -> they should view it from industry standpoint. Too many ad dollars going to one company. Geoffrey
