Who’s Jealous?

The Washington Post reported this morning that Amnesty International has launched a human rights campaign in … the United States. Benjamin Jealous, former executive director of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a coalition of black newspapers, has been named executive director.

Speaking in January 2001 of the recently completed presidential election, Jealous said not only that Gore won but that “Indeed, the election isn’t over.” Moreover, he said, “We tend to take our own oppression for granted. Our commitment is to make sure that black young people understand that we won this election.” One web site, Gay Today, in an article entitled “The Lies of Texas Are Upon You” that argued on the day Bush was inaugurated the office of President of the United States became “legally vacant,” also referred to Jealous approvingly:

One man who objects to this illegal installation has publicly called George Bush “the Butcher of Texas,” and his elevation to the presidency “…a national crime.” That man is Benjamin Jealous, executive director of the National Newspaper Publishers’ Association.

Who better to lead a “human rights campaign” in the United States?

He was right, then. In January 2000, the presidential election wasn’t over; it was still 10 months away.

Oops. That was my typo, not Jealous’s misspeaking. I’ve gone back and corrected it. Seems that my typing is as challenged as my arithmetic….
