Experienced Workers Neeed Not Apply

Misterthorne has an interesting discussion of experience and diversity in Silicon Valley.

As a 45-year-old unemployed Silicon Valley type, I would have found the test even more interesting if he had controlled for an additional variable, and been a white 30-year-old pretend applicant. Adding in the Asian part makes it hard to control possible ageism from possible reverse racism. (Also, green card or citizens from Asia vs. H1B workers.)

Right now there is a lot of downward pressure on salaries, and I think HR people think that older workers are less likely to accept that. (I’ve seen ads for totally unpaid positions, not even stock.) They are probably right: I filed a complaint with DoLabor over an ad I thought was soliciting H1B programmers at about 2/3 the prevailing wage (which itself is 2/3 the 2001 peak).
