Daisy Lundy, who recently reported being attacked by a white male who said “no one wants a nigger to be president” (of the Student Council), is now … president of the Student Council.
Her opponent, Ed Hallen, a third year engineering student, withdrew from the race, stating that “a ‘divisive’ election could compromise the community’s attempt to unite after the Feb. 26 attack.”
I can’t really blame Hallen for backing out because the attack along with UVA’s (over)reaction to it put Hallen put in an awkward position. No matter how the election went, it would be bad for Hallen. If he loses the election then he’s a loser. If he wins the election then he spends a year being taunted by racist students which I’m sure Hallen also viewed as a form of losing. The easist way out—QUIT and get the diversity crowd to hail you as a hero.
Aren’t election divisive by definition? They divide the electorate by those who prefer candidate A, those who prefer candidate B, and those who prefer neither.
