“Appearances Reflective Of Society”

Reader Linda Seebach sends word of an article today in her paper, the Rocky Mountain News, reporting that the Colorado Attorney General has filed a brief supporting the University of Michigan, making Colorado the 21st state to have done so. The Attorney General, Ken Salazar, is a Democrat. The Governor, Bill Owens, a Republican, opposed the move but lacks the authority to give orders to the state attorney general.

Salazar said Michigan’s policies are not quota systems, which are unconstitutional. He said states must be able to establish their own programs within constitutional frameworks.

Educational institutions must have academic freedom “to fairly admit qualified applicants of many backgrounds, ideas and appearances reflective of the society in which they will live and contribute,” he said.

Yes, indeed. We must maintain reflective appearances.

Say What?
