Two quick points.
First, I wouldn’t read too much into typos (at least at the expense of the point the author made). It’s about even-odds that the mistakes came from the student letter editors as they did from the author. (Speaking as a former student op-ed editor).

The author’s example doesn’t work because supposedly the money that’s already in the students’ pockets would be reflective of the income discrepancy that he cites. Yet, my guess is that the minorities were still offended.
