Raines of Error

Andrew Sullivan, Mickey Kaus, and others have skewered the New York Times for spiking internal dissent and enforcing conformity with the views of its editorial pages on other departments.

Has anyone noted the irony of those editorial pages preaching diversity as a compelling value for colleges when the NYT is so unwilling to practice it (at least intellectual or political diversity) itself?

UPDATE [12/6/2002] According to Editor & Publisher, the National Society of Newspaper Columnists is “befuddled” that the New York Times spiked two columns disagreeing with the paper’s editorial stance.

They NYT should recognize, pronounced the pundits, “that a newspaper informs its readers best when it provides a diversity of opinion.”
