Diversity Indoctrination

Erin O’Connor quotes a chilling description of a mandatory (for residence advisors) diversity training class at the University of Michigan.

For an equally if not more chilling demand for the University of Virginia, and all universities, to make diversity training the center of the curriculum as well, “to institutionalize diversity as a core value,” so that upon graduation “students can be described as culturally versatile or competent,” see this student column in the Cavalier Daily.

The author wants UVa “to be at the forefront of remodeling the national education paradigm, for which diversity is a core value.” This would require mandatory classes, “diversity education training at faculty meetings,” and new classes “presenting students with a course curriculum that addresses issues in cultural consciousness….” In short, according to the author, there is “a necessity for students at the University to engage in discourse that will open their eyes and ears to one another’s differences … that fosters a better understanding of cultural differences….”

It might be helpful if those making these demands would spend a bit less time demanding the recognition of “differences” and a bit more discussing what those unrecognized differences are.

Say What?
