“Democrats’ Goal: More Black Voters”

Newsday has an article today reporting on the efforts of some Democratic operatives who are urging the Party to cultivate its “base.”

My favorite two paragraphs:

Democrats admit Republicans successfully penetrated African-American markets with radio ads. But they charge the ads were negative by accusing Democrats of taking African-Americans for granted, and were aimed at suppressing the black vote.

For years, the party has moved to the right on issues, taking its base for granted while trying to court swing voters, said the Rev. Al Sharpton, a Democratic civil rights activist in New York who has also criticized Democrats for not helping McCall.

That’s actually an interesting point: if Republicans say what Al Sharpton and others quoted in the article say, it’s negative campaigning.
