The Democrats: Whither or Wither?

Charlie Cook’s influential political newsletter, “Off to the Races,” (send enquiries to email hidden; JavaScript is required) reports today that the recent election has been “over-interpreted, or perhaps even misinterpreted,” its significance greatly exaggerated. “This was no tidal wave,” he writes, “no seismic shift in American politics.”

Similarly, E.J. Dionne argues in his column today that “the Democrats’ biggest missed opportunity” was not reminding the voters that they like mixed government, “that while the public likes the president, it preferred a Congress that could have put a check on what he and his GOP colleagues might do if they had the run of Washington.”

Significantly contrary to both of these analyses, a Gallup poll taken between November 8 and 10, summarized today by Bryon York on NRO, suggests exactly the opposite.
