Quote of the Day II

Rep. Bobby (Bellesiles/Wiener) Scott (D, Va) quoted in the Washington Post:

Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (Va.), ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, defended Rosenbaum yesterday, calling the Republicans’ criticism of his testimony “ridiculous” and based on “semantics.”

….

Scott said the Republicans were intent on “punishing” Rosenbaum because they did not like his views on the guidelines. “If you went over everybody’s testimony like they went over this judge’s testimony, nobody would ever want to testify,” he said. [Emphasis added]

Scott was referring to testimony from Judge James M. Rosenbaum, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court in Minnesota, before the House Judiciary Committee in which he advocated a change in sentencing guidelines by referring to cases in which the convicted parties were required by the guidelines to serve much longer sentences than he thought just. Upon examination, many of his examples were found to have actually been sentenced to much shorter sentences than the guidelines required. Lamar Smith (R, Tex), subcommittee chairman, said “”The report points out misleading statements by Judge Rosenbaum. I am extremely troubled by his testimony.”

Say What?
